Burn Authorization Automated Telephone System Instructions

When using a telephone to request for a burn authorization, please call toll free 1-800-665-2876 to access the Smoke Management System.  In the Fresno/Clovis area, please call 1-559-227-7143.  The automated system may be accessed anytime between 8:00 PM of the evening prior to the day you wish to burn and 2:00 PM of the day of the burn.

Fresno/Clovis Area: 1-559-227-7143
Toll Free: 1-800-665-2876 (1-800-665-BURN)

Once you have accessed the Smoke Management System, you will hear three options for you to select.

  • To seek burn authorization, press or say “1”
  • To apply for or change an agricultural burn permit, press or say “2”
  • To report Illegal burning, press or say “3”

  1. You will first be directed to enter or say your burn permit number and security code.  Enter the numbers from your burn permit by either using the touch-tone keys on your phone or by speaking the number clearly into the phone mouthpiece.

  2. You will then be directed to enter or say the location number of the location of your burn.  Each location on your burn permit has been assigned a location number.

  3. You will then be directed to enter or say the crop code of the material you wish to burn.  Each type of material  which you are authorized to burn at the location has been assigned a crop code.  If you are burning more than one type of material at that location, a separate request must be made for each additional crop material you plan to burn.

  4. You will then be directed to enter or say the number of acres of materials to be burned.  For example, if you plan to burn almond pruning that came from 15 acres of a 40 acre almond orchard, only the 15 acres for today should be reported.  If you have a small amount (less than the equivalent of one acre) of material to burn, report it as one acre.

  5. The system will determine whether the smoke generated from your proposed burn can be accommodated in your geographic area.

  6. If the burn is approved, you will be told of any starting time limitation and asked to enter or say the time you plan to ignite the burn.  Provide the time to the nearest 15 minutes.

  7. You will be asked to provide a telephone number where you can be reached concerning this burn.  Enter or say the telephone number, including area code.

  8. You will be provided with a confirmation number.

Your burn request is not complete until you receive a confirmation number.  Anyone burning without having received a confirmation number will be doing so in violation of the rules.

  9. If your burn cannot be approved for the day requested, you will be asked if you want to be placed on the waiting list.  When on the waiting list, you will be called on the afternoon prior to the day you will be allowed to burn and asked to call back if you want to burn.  If you are unable to burn and do not make the return call, you will retain your position on the list and will be called the next time burn allocation is available in your area.  You may defer up to three (3) times without forfeiting your place on the waiting list.

  10. Once the transaction is completed for this location, you will be asked if you want to burn at another location listed on the permit.  Should you have another burn request, the process will repeat beginning with Step 2 of these instructions.
