The Waiting List

The waiting list is an option available through the Smoke Management System if your burn request cannot be approved for the day requested.   When a location is added to the waiting list, you will be called on the afternoon prior to the day you will be allowed to burn and asked to call back if you want to burn.  If you are unable to burn and do not make a return call, you will retain your position on the list and will be called the next time burn allocation is available in your area. You may defer up to three (3) times without forfeiting your place on the waiting list.

If you receive a call informing you that a burn from the waiting list is now eligible to proceed, you may choose to burn on the following day or defer to a later date.

When using the automated phone system, please do the following:

  1. To confirm that you want to burn on the following day, call the automated phone system at 1-800-665-2876 or 1-559-227-7143 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM to confirm that you will burn on the following day.

  2.
    • You will be asked to enter or say your burn permit number and security code.
    • You will then be provided with a start time limitation and will be asked to enter or say the time you want to start the burn
    • A confirmation number will be provided to you once the transaction is complete.   Your burn request is not complete until you receive a confirmation number. Anyone burning without having received a confirmation number will be doing so in violation of the rules.
    • If you call after 7:00 PM, your exclusive reservation to burn could be lost to others, but if allocation is still available you will be able to burn.  If the allocation is already full, your place on the waiting list will be retained and you will be called the next day burning is available in your geographic area.

  3. If you choose not to burn on the following day, simply do not call and your place on the waiting list will be retained.  You will be called the next day burning is available in your geographic area.  You may defer up to three (3) times without forfeiting your place on the waiting list.

To use the District’s website to request a burn authorization go directly to http://sms.valleyair.org. The web pages will lead you through the same process as described above for the automated phone system. Your burn request will not be complete until you receive a confirmation number on the screen.
