Our Amazing Lungs
Pictures of healthy and diseased lung tissue

"Our lungs are a very delicate interface that separates us from our environment. They have an enormous surface area, so large, that if they were spread out they would cover the area of two tennis courts. This enormous surface is so delicate that it allows molecules of oxygen from the atmosphere to pass freely into our bloodstream and molecules of carbon dioxide from our blood to flow back out into the air. And yet, this delicate, enormous surface is constantly exposed to bacteria, viruses, dusts, fumes, and gases. It is no wonder, therefore, that our lungs so often mirror our seemingly limitless capacity to do harm."

-- Dr. Alfred Munzer
