What is RAAN?

The District’s Real-Time Air Advisory Network (RAAN) is an automated tool that provides Valley residents with updates from the air monitor of their choice. Subscribers can receive email or text notifications to view hourly air quality data as local conditions change. By combining local air quality information with specific, concentration-based health recommendations, RAAN makes it possible for Valley residents to make informed decisions about when outdoor activities should be limited, and for whom. RAAN provides actual air quality data from monitors throughout the Valley. The hourly nature of the system provides a detailed picture of actual pollution concentrations in an area during a given time.

RAAN will soon be providing Valley residents with real-time air quality information on a neighborhood by neighborhood level. The District will have the ability to estimate hourly neighborhood by neighborhood air pollution concentrations by taking into account real-time meteorological conditions in each of 3,600 Valley grid cells and observed air quality concentrations from the District monitoring network. This real-time reporting system will have the capability to take into account and make adjustments for unforeseen events that may impact air quality in a particular neighborhood.

The use of community monitoring through the District’s implementation of AB 617 will serve as a compliment to the health protection already provided by District RAAN.
