Air Pollution in World-Famous Scenic Wildlands

About 85% of California is made up of forests, rangelands and pastures-- world-famous natural ecosystems that give us watersheds and beautiful, awe-inspiring wildlands as well as timber and livestock.

California's 33 million acres of forestland, much of it public lands owned by all of us, have not escaped the SMOG ATTACK.  Air pollution is able to literally climb the valley walls into the mountains, and the trees suffer. Extensive tree damage in the San Bernadino Mountains was discovered in the 1960's. More tree injury has been documented in other Southern California National Parks and in the Sierra Nevada since the 1970's. It's not a new problem – it's an expanding problem that's still with us!
