Honda Civic hybrid

Other Ultra-Low-Emission Vehicles are hybrid cars which use two engines, one electric and one gas-powered under the hood plus a battery hidden behind the rear seats. Hybrid cars can switch efficiently between the two power sources depending on which is needed to reduce pollution and maximize energy efficiency. For example when sitting at a red light or stuck idling in traffic, the hybrid system switches off the gasoline engine--saving fuel and eliminating emissions. One model promises 66 miles to the gallon, cuts smog-producing emissions by 90%, and reduces the greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, by 50%. Another model under development promises 80 mpg!
