The National Ambient Air Quality Standards (or NAAQS) prescribe a level for each of the 6 criteria air pollutants that cannot be exceeded during a specific time period. Particulate matter (PM), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and lead (Pb) are strictly regulated because of their proven harmful effects on our health and the health of our environment.
