Natural gas is the cheapest and least environmentally destructive fossil fuel, and it is increasingly used to generate electricity. Even though burning it does produce air pollution, using natural gas emits 1/2 of the CO2 per unit of energy of coal, 1/6th of the NOx, and almost no sulfur dioxide or particulate matter. About 10% of electricity in the U.S. is generated from natural gas. Even though there is enough to last for several decades, natural gas is not renewable and will run out. And as it becomes harder to find, the price will soar.
